How to paint your bathroom tiles in 5 steps

Painting bathroom tiles is perhaps the best way to revamp the look of a bathroom with minimal effort.

It is surprising the improvement that is achieved by applying a coat of paint. Sometimes we find bathrooms that have very outdated tiles, but we do not take any action for not making a change of tiles.

The good news is that there is special paint for bathrooms. With a boat we can modernize the appearance of the walls without having to get into a reform.

Let’s review the steps you must follow to correctly paint the tiles of your bathroom.

Step 1: Clear all the walls

The first thing you should do is remove all the furniture and elements that hang on the walls.

The sink and toilet should remain in place, but you will have to remove the rest of the elements.

Remove any existing shelves, shower curtain rod, and mirror. You should leave the walls completely uncovered and try not to have any object inside the bathroom that bothers you when painting.

Step 2: Prepare the surface

The next thing will be to clean all the walls. In order for the paint to adhere correctly to the tile it is essential to do a deep cleaning. Help yourself with a scourer to be able to rub the entire surface.

It may happen that during the cleaning process some piece of the joints of the tiles jumps. To avoid damage, it is best to fill the crack with putty.

Once you have filled the hole you will have to wait for the putty to dry.

Step 3: Protect bathroom elements

To paint more comfortably it is best to use bodybuilder tape to protect the different elements of the bathroom. Place this tape on the sockets and at the junction of the ceiling with the wall.

It is also advisable to protect the sink and toilet or any other element that you have not been able to get out. In this case plastics will suffice.

Finally you must cover the ground. It will be enough for you to place some old newspapers. It is inevitable that drops of paint fall, so the more you protect the rest of the elements, the less you will have to clean later.

Step 4: Apply the paint

Now it’s time to apply the paint, but you must do it in two phases.

First paint the corners and nooks and crannies with a small brush. It will be a slower job but it is important to paint these hard-to-reach areas first. If the tiles protrude a lot you should also paint with the brush all the joints.

When you have painted the corners it is time to use the roller. Apply the paint to the entire surface and give a second coat if necessary. You should always apply the roller in the same direction.

Step 5: Let the paint dry

Once you have finished painting, let the paint dry. To speed up the process it is advisable to leave the door open, so all the moisture can come out.

When you have already checked that the paint is dry, remove the protections and replace all the furniture.

It is important that later when you go to clean the walls of the bathroom do not do it with a brush or scourer. If you do so, you will lift the paint and leave the old tile visible.

It is best to use a product that is not abrasive and apply it with a cloth. This way you will maintain the original appearance of the painting.
